Ascent to Petrostrouga
An ideal route for those who want to walk on the mythical mountain. The ideal route for winter and summer, where you can get to know the mythical mountain with its different vegetation zones and unique over-aged robo trees (Pinus Heildreichii – Bosnian pine trees). Our route takes us through a dense forest that constantly alternates between beech, pine and fir trees and ends in the thickest forest with rhododendrons in the Petrostruga area, where Sarakatsan shepherds used to live in the past. For the more adventurous we can continue for another 1.5 hours to the top of Skourta where the sky and the sea become one in the distance of the horizon….
Information
The route follows a wonderful forest path with frequent changes in the tree belt from beech, to pine, fir and finally the famous Bosnian pine trees. Our climb is estimated to have a total duration of 3.5 hours. Our first stop will be after about 1 hour in a clearing where the dense beech forest begins. As we continue our next stop will be in 1.5 hours at the ridge of Kokas peak, a short breather and the last uphill is ahead of us, to lead us for a start to the place where one of the leading modern Greek painters, Vassilis Ithakisio resided. We will find ourselves in the cave where he spent more than 20 summers and where he used it as a base for his artistic pursuits, you can even see 2 names of Muses that he had carved in a special way on the rocks. Continuing on, we will pass by the Apostolidis reservoir, where the Sarakatsan shepherds used to get water from and from there we will traverse to the Petrostrouga shelter. A magnificent shelter surrounded by century-old robo-trees and with an endless view of the magnificent blue, a view that takes your breath away! Here we will choose whether to make a short stop for a rest and a light snack or sit down for lunch. Return by the same trail to Gortsia and from there for lunch at the Stavros shelter or Prionia (if we don’t sit down for lunch at Petrostrouga)

Gazing at the peaks of Olympus
The route from Prionia to the Spilios Agapitos shelter is the busiest route of Mount Olympus, as it is part of the European path E4, one of the routes leading to the highest point of Greece, Mytikas. Most of the trail is in a forest of pine, beech and fir trees, while at the end of the trail we find the impressive over-aged robola trees (Pinus Heildreichii – Bosnian pine trees). From the refuge you can look out over the high peaks of Mount Olympus, the gorge of Enipeas, Litochoro and Halkidiki!…
Information
We will follow the road to the core of the National Park of Olympus and in 30 minutes we will be at Prionia with its picturesque tavern. Prionia is our starting point and from here the well-marked trail to Spilios Agapitos starts. During our ascent we will find places where we can enjoy the view and catch our breath. The vegetation on the first part is dense and there is a dew, on the last part, the trail begins to meander and the vegetation thins out to be succeeded by overgrown rhododendrons. The shelter and the peaks can be seen from a distance, but it will take a little longer to reach it. The Spilios Agapitos shelter is the first organized mountaineering shelter in Greece and the best organized, it has a large paved courtyard where we can enjoy the wonderful view of the peaks and at the same time the large gorge of Enipeas, Litochoro and Thermaikos Gulf with the Pierian coast. At this point we will decide either to stop for a drink and snack and descend to eat at Prionia, or sit down for lunch at the shelter and descend full and full, it’s up to you guys!
