The Butterfly Valley is one of the most attractive destinations on the island and is a great place for those who wish to enjoy the beauty of nature. You will love the relaxing walk through the shaded, green valley with its small river and beautiful waterfalls.
You are permanently surrounded by butterflies camouflaged against the tree trunks as you walk to the monastery at the top, or take a moment to rest on one of the wooden benches along the trail (UNGUIDED). The Butterfly Valley is a unique nature reserve, which apart from its aesthetic value is the only natural forest of Liquidambar orientalis (Oriental Sweetgum trees) in Europe and a resting place for the Jersey tiger (Panaxia Quadripunctaria) , a nocturnal moth.
The peak butterfly season in the valley is from late May to mid-September. Now that you have encountered one of the most famous places in Rhodes, you also know that in ancient times the Rhodians were considered the largest wine merchants in the Mediterranean. Today’s wines are excellent.
After the butterfly valley, you can visit a nearby family vineyard and winery. Wine is not just about drinking it, it is about smelling it, observing it, tasting it, tasting it and talking about it (Henry VII) and that is exactly what you are going to do.
The winery owner guides you through the rich traditions and specialties of the vineyard as you walk through the vineyards until you sit on the large terrace that has the vineyard spread out before you.
