Hiking in Messinia Claimed

Sotirianika and after 4 hours you reach Altomira. The trail has been built with the effort made in cooperation of the local communities since 1904 and lasted 25 years.

Due to the hard terrain, the difficulty about it was unimaginable especially back then.

The main feature of the trail is the breathtaking scenery that can be enjoyed throughout the hike. The trail is characterized for its 83 bends, which are joined by a steep cliff. 78 of which turn 180 degrees. The difficulty of the trail is minimal as the incline is slight allowing you to enjoy it to the fullest.

At the end of the hike and before returning, enjoy our local snacks and drinks at Altomiraspings.

Along its entire length it is very easy to observe the uniqueness of its morphology, as well as its unique aesthetic value.

We chose 2 different routes. A long route of 11 km and a short one of 6 km. The short route is one-way and arguably much easier than the long route, as it is almost half the distance.

But the distance to walk through the canyon is longer than the long route. Our guide drops us off under the bridge that connects the two sides of the canyon.

After 6 kilometers of hiking through the canyon we will end up at the most beautiful beach away from the resort. There we will have the opportunity to swim and get some juice near a well known with local beach bar with high visitation.

We chose 2 different routes.

A long one of about 11 km and a short one of about 6 km. The long route is an adventurous 11 km loop.

Our adventure starts at Socrates’ café tasting the excellent Greek coffee that only he can make. After the coffee, the hike begins and for the first 2 km we descend a dirt road at the bottom of the canyon.

For the next 5km we have to climb up the canyon to a handmade cobbled road. In some cases during the hike through the canyon we have to use our hands to cross some rocks. This is the only difficulty.

For the last 4 km we return to the coaches from the top of the canyon, again on a dirt road. This way we can cross arguably the most beautiful part of the canyon below, but also admire the panorama on the way back.
