Hiking in the unique Meteora
Huge rocks rising into the sky, living sculptures carved by prehistoric rivers and the elements of nature. One of the 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in Greece. These rocky giants are also a sacred site with the famous monasteries hanging on the steep cliffs. How were the monasteries built? How did they transport the materials? Monk climbers with pulleys and nets and bare hands have built and maintained the second largest monastic community of the Orthodox Church in Greece since the 10th century AD…
Meteora means “hovering in the middle of the sky”, that’s what you will feel once you are on their rocks and the view will take your breath away!
Information
We start at 7:30 am from Thessaloniki and move on the National Road towards Larissa. On our way we will stop to enjoy the imposing Olympus rising in front of us, pass through Leptokarya and Platamonas and head for the valley of Tempi. In the valley we will take a short walk on the Pinios river and through the suspension bridge we will also visit the chapel of Ag. Paraskevi. A few words about the myth that connects the river, the history of the region and you will have the opportunity to see and buy traditional fire clay utensils. From here we will need another 1.5 hour drive to Kalambaka, where the rocks of Meteora will stand around us, a short stop, a coffee in hand and the necessary refreshment and in 10 minutes we will be at the starting point of our route. During our ascent we will see up close how these sandstone giants are made, we will cross a dense oak forest, where we will surely find turtles! We will pass an unknown monastery, the Monastery of the Lord’s Supper and head towards the statue of Vlahava, where we will have the opportunity to enjoy a unique view from the usually unseen side of Meteora. After our short break, we will continue in the direction of Megalo Meteoro, which will emerge timidly as we cross the ridge. At this point depending on the opening time of the monasteries there is the option to visit either Megalo Meteoro or Varlaam Monastery, it will take us about 1 hour. On our exit we will continue downhill along the old path that will lead us to the vineyards and the spot where we parked, the scenery at this point is a bit reminiscent of Game of Thrones. After these 7 kilometers we are waiting for a delicious meal in a traditional kitchen – tavern in Kalambaka.
