The amazing off-road adventure starts by crossing a valley full of orange trees, avocado trees and vegetable gardens. Climbing to the foot of the White Mountains and passing through the Cretan villages of Deres, Vatolakos, Alikianos, Fournes, Meskla, Zourva and Therissos, we will get a taste of mountainous Crete and stop for coffee at Deres to enjoy breakfast. Coffee or mountain tea will be offered free of charge to our guests enjoying village life away from mass tourism.
Continuing our tour, we will follow the off-road route to the shepherd’s hut called “Mitato”, away from tourist areas, where only a four-wheeled driver can approach to enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of northern Crete and if he is lucky. . to admire some wild eagles and goats up close, giving us a good reason to stop.
A small rocky road will take us to the highest point of our journey 1350 meters above sea level in the heart of the White Mountains of Crete, where we will learn all about the lifestyle of a shepherd. We will learn where the famous Cretan cheese “Graviera” is produced and explore an original shepherd’s hut called “Mitato”.
On our way back we will enjoy the best panoramic view of Chania from above until we reach the village of Therisso where we will visit a small traditional Cretan tavern. There, we will be welcomed by the owner who will introduce us to Cretan cuisine with plenty of local food and wine giving us a sense of the famous Cretan hospitality.
After our lunch, we will take the way back through the amazing Thirissos Gorge which will lead us back to Chania town.

south to reach the great orange valley. In a few minutes, we will be in the valley through orange trees and rural areas full of aromas and flavors! Crossing the valley and the river in our four-wheel drive vehicles, we will meet the villages of Varipetros, Agia, Alikianos, Fournes and start climbing in altitude through an off-road road, with dense vegetation and the best panoramic view of Chania.
Following an altitude of 1000 m, our adrenaline will be elevated as we continue our off-road route through the heart of the White Mountains, crossing the unknown pastoral paths, breathing in the fresh air and the breathtaking scenery of wild vegetation, animals and amazing landscapes. At the end of our route, we will reach the Kallergi shelter at an altitude of 1680m above sea level.
The view just above the Samaria Gorge is unique. Looking south you will see the Libyan Sea and the highest peaks of the White Mountains surrounding you.
From the balcony of Samaria, we will be welcomed by the owner of the shelter with a hot cup of mountain tea followed by a delicious Cretan meal with wine. Shots of raki will not be missed during our lunch break. With a full stomach, lots of photos and pictures we continue the off-road route for 5 km to reach the Omalos Plateau and Xyloskalo where the entrance to the Samaria Gorge is located.
A quick stop for photos and we follow the paved road to Chania. Along the way we pass the beautiful and historic village of Lakki, where we stop for some photos and information about the village and then continue our journey back to Chania filled with the essence of Crete.
* Please note that during the winter (December-March) the Kallergi shelter may not be accessible due to heavy snow. In this case, we arrive at Xyloskalo (the entrance to the Samaria Gorge) and follow the road routes until we reach the village of Therisso where lunch is served. After lunch we follow the road behind the gorge of Therissos and reach the city of Chania
