Kayaking in Methoni and Sapienza Island
Methoni was the “eye” of Venice in the Mediterranean and an important commercial and maritime centre for the Venetians in medieval times. The castle of Methoni is the most impressive fortress in the Peloponnese, built on a rocky outcrop into the sea and joined by a bridge. Opposite Methoni, the green island of Sapienza, integrated in the Natura 2000 network, is home to rare species of flora and fauna. Near the coast of the island there are countless shipwrecks some of which are still visible with a mask and snorkel…
Our journey starts from the beach of Methoni, right next to the impressive fortress. The guide will brief you on paddling techniques, safety measures and equipment before we set off on a fairly challenging paddling adventure. Sailing our kayaks alongside the imposing walls of the castle, we observe its architecture with impressive arches and bastions. We travel back in time with images that come from the medieval past of the region. Soon we cross the canal between Methoni and Sapienza where many ancient shipwrecks are scattered. We will have the opportunity to swim on the northern coast of the island, searching with mask and snorkel for some visible remains of the shipwrecks. Following the coastline we will reach the beautiful beach of the island. Here we will rest, swim and enjoy a homemade picnic with local delicacies. The island is a natural monument covered by a dense, ancient kuma forest in which wild muflon sheep, the wild goat kri-kri, partridges, pheasants and many other species that we might encounter if we are lucky enough. After the break we depart to explore the northern coastline and complete our journey back to Methoni.
