Sea Kayak and guided tour of the Sunken City and the Small Theatre of Epidaurus
Perhaps the best excursion of our group, because of the unique combination of history, culture, gastronomy, folklore, fun and entertainment. Our incredible experience starts from Yalasi beach, located a short distance from the center of Epidaurus. We will head west towards the famous …
Sunken City, also known as the ”Lost Atlantis” of Argolida, with a magnificent view of the imposing volcano of Methana.
The city was built in 1200 BC; you can see its ruins and in some places even the ancient breakwater is preserved. The walls, the foundations of buildings, the huge amphorae and the paved sections are submerged, a few meters below sea level and just a few meters away from the coast. With a depth of only two metres, it makes it a unique location for scuba diving, snorkelling and underwater imagery.
Once we arrive at the site, we will provide you with masks to swim among the ancient ruins, take photos, observe the unique colourful fish and experience the aura and the unique healing energy of Epidaurus (Epidaurus: the place where the aura works). Once we manage to convince you to move on, our next destination is the Little Theatre of Epidaurus.
The Little Theatre of Epidaurus is located in an area called Nisi, near the port of Old Epidaurus. It was the theatre of the ancient city-state and apart from theatrical performances, it also hosted religious and political celebrations.
This theatre was discovered in the early 1970s, under a field of olive trees and the process of restoration continues to this day. Its construction began in the 4th century BC and was originally built to meet the needs of this small city-state, so its size was not large.
It had 9 rows and 18 rows of seats and could accommodate about 2,000 spectators. Some sites have inscriptions showing that the theatre was dedicated to the god Dionysus and was built in sections. This theatre was completely reformed in Roman times: the orchestra became semi-circular and the seats were rearranged.
However, it is believed that the small theatre of Epidaurus was in operation only seven centuries after its construction, because the historian Pausanias, who visited the area in the mid-2nd century BC, did not mention anything about it. After several excavations and much restoration work in recent decades, the Epidaurus Theatre now hosts the annual Greek Festival, which is celebrated in the summer with music, dance and theatre performances.
There are seats for 800 spectators and work is underway to restore more of them. The performances are mainly in modern or ancient Greek.
At the end of our journey, we will continue through gastronomy, with a visit to the “Athina EcoFarm”. There, you will relax, unwind and enjoy an amazing meal of local organic produce, all grown in the area according to the ancient way. After learning about the ancient Greek heritage in cooking, growing and harvesting, we will return to our starting point after an unforgettable journey through history, taste and culture.
