Sea Kayak in Nafplio
An excursion that starts under the castle of Palamidi, leading to culture and centuries of history, in a unique experience of a lifetime. We will start from Karathonas beach, a favorite of the locals. A beach that has the potential to take you away from the stress of everyday life and …
make you part of an almost exotic image in a matter of minutes. It starts behind the Palamidi Rock for about three kilometers, with palm trees, eucalyptus trees and a small island that is a place where seagulls give birth to their young.
Passing close by, we may have the opportunity to watch how they are taught to swim and fish for themselves. In the distance we can see the majestic Palamidi, the fortification built by the Venetians called Acronauplia, and even the fortress of Argos from a distance. Akronafplia is the imposing rocky peninsula that was once the Acropolis of Nafplio. The Turks called it “H-Kale” which means “inside the fortress”.
We will continue paddling under the shadow of the great fortress, following the magnificent coastline through picturesque beaches accessible only by sea. We will reach “Bourtzi” and the fortifications that protected Nafplio from pirates.
“Castello dello Soglio” was the first name of the Venetian castle, which together with Palamidi is considered one of the landmarks of Nafplio. Nevertheless, the name that eventually prevailed is Bourji, which in Turkish means “Island – Fortress”. It was built on the islet of Agioi Theodoroi in 1473 by the Italian Gabelo and therefore its name is Italian, meaning “throne castle”.
Furthermore, if you have heard someone refer to Nafplio as the “port of the chain” (Porto Cadena), this is because there was indeed a movable chain connecting Acronauplia to Bourtzi, the purpose of which was to protect the port and the city from sea invaders. Leaving Bourtzi behind, we will arrive at a beautiful beach to rest, relax, have lunch, swim a bit and return to where we started.
