Sea Kayak and tour of the Sunken City and the small Theater of Epidaurus
Probably the best outing of our group, because of the unique combination of history, culture, gastronomy, folklore, fun and entertainment. Our incredible experience begins at Yalasi beach, located a short walk from the center of Epidaurus. We will paddle west towards the famous Sunken City, also known as the Lost Atlantis of Argolida, with a magnificent view of the imposing volcano of Methana...
The city was built in 1200 BC. You can see its remains and in some places even the ancient breakwater is preserved. Walls, building foundations, huge amphorae and paved sections are submerged, metres below the sea surface and just a few metres away from the coast. Being only two metres deep makes it a unique location for underwater viewing, snorkelling and underwater photography.
Once we reach the bottom, we will give you masks to swim among the ancient ruins, take photos, observe the unique colorful fish and experience for yourself the aura and the unique healing energy of Epidaurus (Epidaurus: the place where the aura works).
When we manage to convince you to move on, our next destination is the Little Theatre of Epidaurus. The Little Theatre of Epidaurus is located in the Nisi area, near the port of Old Epidaurus. It used to be the theatre of the ancient city-state and apart from dramatic performances it also hosted religious and political celebrations. This theatre was discovered in the early 1970s, under a field of olive trees and the process of restoration continues to this day.
Its construction began in the 4th century BC and was originally built to meet the needs of this small city-state, so its size was not large. It had 9 levels and 18 rows of seats and could accommodate about 2,000 spectators. Some seats have inscriptions indicating that the theatre was dedicated to the god Dionysus and was built in sections.
This theatre was completely remodelled in Roman times: the orchestra became semicircular and the seats were rearranged. However, it is believed that the small theatre of Epidaurus was only in operation for seven centuries after its construction, because the historian Pausanias, who visited the area in the middle of the 2nd century BC, did not mention anything about it.
After many excavations and many restoration works over the last decades, the Little Theatre of Epidaurus now hosts the annual Greek Festival, which is celebrated in the summer with music, dance and theatrical performances. There are seats for 800 spectators and work is underway to restore more of them. Performances are mainly in modern or ancient Greek.
At the end of our trip, we will continue on to gastronomy, visiting the "Athina EcoFarm". There we will relax, rest and enjoy an amazing meal of local organic produce, all grown in the area according to the ancient way.
Having learned about the ancient Greek heritage of cooking, growing and harvesting, we will return to our starting point after an unforgettable journey through history, taste and culture.
