Wine tasting & guided tour in the butterfly valley of Rhodes
Slowly, slowly... thousands of butterflies are resting here! The Valley of the Butterflies is one of the most attractive destinations on the island and a great place for those who wish to enjoy the beauty of nature...
You will love the peaceful walk through the shady, green valley with the small river and the beautiful waterfalls. You are permanently surrounded by butterflies camouflaged in the tree trunks as you walk to the monastery at the top, or rest for a while on one of the wooden benches along the trail (unguided).
The Butterfly Valley is a unique natural reserve, which apart from its aesthetic value, is also the site of the only natural forest of Liquidambar orientalis (Oriental Sweetgum) in Europe and a resting place for the Jersey tiger (Panaxia quadripunctaria). The season with the most butterflies in the valley is from late May to mid-September.
Now that you have come across one of the most famous places in Rhodes, did you also know that in ancient times the Rhodians were considered the biggest wine merchants in the Mediterranean? Today's wines are also excellent. Discover for yourself by visiting a nearby family vineyard and winery.
Wine is not just about drinking, it is about smelling, observing, tasting, drinking and talking about it (Henry VII) and that is exactly what we will do. The winery owner will guide you through the rich traditions and specialties of his vineyard as you walk through the vines until you sit on the large terrace with the vineyard spread out before you.
Now it's time to try some real local delicacies (dishes) either on the vineyard terrace or in a local village taverna. You can't leave Rhodes without tasting Greek salad, feta cheese, eggplant salad, meat pies, pita pies, tzatziki, fresh fried potatoes, pumpkin fritters, all cooked with Greek olive oil.
You can also buy bottles of wine with labels that are not available on the market, exclusively made for the winery's guests.
