The massif of Chelmos, or the Aronian Mountains, dominates between the great gorges of Vouraikos and the mythical river Krathi! With its rich relief and impressive nature, the ascent to the top of Chelmos has a lot to offer...

Starting from Xirokambos, just before the parking lot of the Ski Center, and at an altitude of about 1,600 meters, we follow a forest road that leads us through a dense fir forest. We hike through the pristine nature of Chelmos, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the mountain. Entering the alpine zone and climbing up to the peak we pass by the Neraidorachi, the most famous peak of Achaia! At an altitude of 2,238 meters, one of the most modern telescopes in Europe has been installed.
Fairyland is one of the darkest regions in Europe, giving the Aristarchus telescope the ability to penetrate deep into the universe! From the High Peak of Chelmos at 2,355 meters we have the opportunity to enjoy an amazing view! The imposing Erymanthos to the west and Dourduvana, Kyllini and the steep cuts of the other peaks of Chelmos really steal the show. Descending towards our starting point we will enjoy a nice break for a delicious picnic!
This hike requires good physical condition and is addressed to those who love wild mountain nature!

Hiking in the gorge of Vouraikos, Achaia
The Vouraikos River originates between the eastern extensions of Erymanthos and the western extensions of Chelmos. The impressive gorge, which the river has carved, is about 20 kilometres long! Imposing cliffs, rushing waterfalls, impressive caves and rich vegetation...
alternating vegetation make up a unique natural landscape. The hiking trail on which we are walking runs parallel to the railway line of the famous Odontotos Railway and is marked as European Path E4. During the route we have the opportunity to enjoy the unique natural environment of the gorge and the wonderful waters of the homonymous river! We descend from Kalavryta to Diakofto passing through the richly changing vegetation, caves with stalagmites and stalactites and waterfalls of torrents!
Our hike includes a stop for a delightful picnic under the dew of the trees! For our return to the starting point we will take the Odontotos having the opportunity to enjoy its wonderful route.
The crossing of the Vouraikos Gorge lasts about 6 hours and is undoubtedly a unique experience for hikers with good physical condition and adventurous spirit!
