Hiking in the mountain of Taygetos
It is the highest mountain range of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. Taygetos is located at an altitude of 2,407 m and is a mountain with rich flora and fauna, included in the Natura 2000 natural habitat network...
For centuries Taygetos was the ultimate training ground for the legendary Spartan warriors. Before the climb we are required to meet the imposing statue of King Leonidas in Sparta to receive his blessings.
According to Greek mythology, Taygetos was named after the nymph Taygetis, one of the Atlanteans and daughter of Atlas. However, according to ancient Greek history, at the top, there was a temple of Apollo, the god of the sun and music.
The Spartans threw criminals, traitors and prisoners into a chasm of the Taygetos known as the Keada.
From the Spartan shelter, at Varvara at 1,550 metres, we leave behind us the Spartan side of the Taygetos and four hours later, climbing the last few metres of the mysterious pyramid peak, we will meet the roofless chapel of Prophet Elias. The view of the entire Messinian Gulf will spread out before us. The way back is almost the same places with a different view.
