Hiking in Mainalo, Dimitsana, Elati Claimed

crosses the legendary Arcadia in the heart of the mythical Peloponnese. With a varied landscape of rugged mountains, gorges and verdant valleys, the trail passes through picturesque villages such as Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Elati, Vytina, Nymphasia and includes eight sections varying in difficulty and length, all of which are worth exploring. .

According to Mythology, the Lousios River got its name because of the nymphs who brought the newborn Zeus to these waters for his first bath.

The trail starts from the village of Dimitsana and the Open Air Museum of Hydroelectric Energy and ends at ancient Gortyna. Temples, monasteries, ascetics, hermitages, watermills, water jets and boats are components that make the landscape special. Among the most important religious monuments are the Old (10th century) and the New (17th century) Monastery of Panagia Filosofos, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos (late 16th century), the watermill of Prodromos Monastery, Agios Andreas of Gortyna. (14th century) and the Ancient City of Gortys (3rd century BC).

The trail to Mainalo is a 75 km mountain trail that crosses the legendary Arcadia in the heart of the mythical Peloponnese. With a diverse landscape of rugged mountains, gorges and green valleys, the trail passes through picturesque villages such as Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Elati, Vytina, Nymphasia and includes eight sections varying in difficulty and length that are well worth exploring.

The route goes down from Elati to the bed of the river Milaon and passes under the hill where the acropolis of the old town of Methydria used to be. The whole path passes through a dense forest full of fir trees. After a short break for a few dips in the crystal clear waters you will reach the village of Vytina, the jewel of Mainalos. There you will have plenty of time for shopping and tasting local delicacies.
